Digital Devices

Technology, COVID, AI, 5G, working from home, multiple devices, multiple screens – just a few of the changes in the past 5 years that have impacted how Australians use smart devices, why they use them, and why vision is being impacted more and more.

We did some research online and found some interesting facts about digital devices. The following stats provide great insights into why eye fatigue and eye strain are becoming more prevalent with the patients independent practices are seeing.

These stats come from google AI and acma.gov.au:

  • At the start of 2025, 26.1 million individuals were using the internet in Australia, representing 97.1% of the population.

  • 97% of Australians own at least one smartphone.

  • 20.9 million social media user identities were in Australia in January 2025, equivalent to 77.9% of the population.

  • On average, Australians used 4.4 types of devices to access the internet in 2020.

  • In 2024, technological advances such as 5G and AI are being integrated into mobile devices, pushing the limits of handheld technology and further enhancing their integration into peoples lives.

  • As businesses demand faster paces and more interconnectivity, having a mobile phone that is constantly reachable is critical to everyday business operations.

  • Over three quarters (77%) of Australian adults used a communication app in 2020 and 72% used a social networking app.

  • Australians spend on average 6 hours 14 minutes online per day.

  • Smartphones are the primary device for internet access, accounting for 64% of online time.

  • 66% of households use tablets to access the internet.

  • Australians spend around 5.5 hours a day on their smartphone.

  • Millennials and Gen Z have the highest average screen times.

  • 24% of Australians spend 3 hours or more on their mobile phones for work or educational purposes.

  • Mobile phone – 91%
  • Laptop – 76%
  • Tablet – 61%
  • Television/Smart TV – 60%
  • Desktop computer – 9%
  • Digital media player – 29%
  • Email – 98%
  • Web browsing – 96%
  • Watch videos – 89%
  • Banking – 89%
  • Access news – 86%
  • Shopping – 83%
  • Posting/engaging content – 73%
  • Video conference calling – 64%
  • Working from home – 2%

How do these stats transfer to patients, what we look at when we complete an eye test
and the products we prescribe?

  1. High screen time can lead to eye strain, sleep problems, increased mental health issues, weight gain, and social withdrawal.

  2. Patients can present with the following symptoms – dry and irritated eyes, fatigue, eye twitching, blurred vision/loss of focus, headaches, neck and back pain, rubbing of the eyes, double vision, and light sensitivity.

  3. Patients are using multiple devices, screens are placed at varying distances, ergonomics for the office and home vary, so needs vary.

  4. Lens designs are varied with multiple pairs often the best outcome for the varied job roles, work needs, and lifestyles of each patient.
